The Malvern Tigers Development Squad is for boys and girls playing (or intending to play) U10 basketball in Summer and Winter 2019 seasons. It is open to both current and new players and is designed to extend players aged 7 to 10 years of age beyond the basics learned in the U8 competition at Waverley Basketball Association and/or our Tiger Cubs Clinic.
The Development Squad is divided into two sessions:
— a Beginner level group that targets those who only recently began playing
— an Intermediate level group targeted more at proficient players who are currently playing in a higher level team or have been playing basketball for a length of time
Emphasis is placed upon developing technical basketball skills, particularly individual ball handling, footwork, passing, layups and shooting. Players are introduced to key individual defensive and offensive techniques and tactics including through game simulation. Unlike the Tiger Cubs Clinic and U8 competition, which use 9 foot nets, the Development Squad uses 10 foot nets and size 6 balls.
The Development Squad sessions are coached by Nathan Ward, who has played over 375 games for the Malvern Tigers and currently coaches U12 and U14 Juniors. Nathan is VJBL accredited and experienced in developing U10 players.
Sessions will run every Sunday afternoon during Term 1, starting on 3 February 2019 with the final session on 31 March 2019 (including the Labour Day long weekend) at the Sacre Coeur college gymnasium (172 Burke Road, Glen Iris):
— Beginners 2-3pm
— Intermediate 3-4pm
Numbers are strictly limited to 16.
The cost of the 9 week program is $135 ($15 per 1 hour session), with net proceeds being contributed back into running the Club.
Participants should bring their own ball (size 6, properly inflated) and water bottle.
